Visiting Lake Garda

Explore Lake Garda

Enjoy a fabulous variety of things to do in Lake Garda. Hop into your motorboat (hired of course) and take a tour around the glorious lake to truly discover what this iconic region has to offer travellers. If you prefer to stay on land, you can take a cycling trip or wander on foot through picturesque towns and villages where you can admire the elegant houses of the rich and famous.

Blessed with a beautiful climate and picturesque views wherever you turn, book a holiday to Lake Garda to enjoy a blissfully idyllic break in the sun.

Feel Lake Garda

There’s plenty of ways to get an authentic feel of this region. Feel the sun on your face and the wind in your hair as you cruise across the waters, smell the mouth-watering aroma of the local dishes, revel in the idyllic silence as you hike through the Lake Idro Valley or experience the thrill of glimpsing Venice as the sun sets.

There's also lots of things to do in Lake Garda for adventure-seekers – gasp as you jump into the clear, cool water of the lakes, scream as you descend from the top of the white-knuckle Raptor ride and after all that, relax with a glass of delicious Bardolino wine with your family and friends.

Taste Lake Garda

One of the best things to do in Lake Garda is to sample the amazing food. Delicious pizzas and pasta are more or less guaranteed on a holiday in Lake Garda. But don’t forget that in this region, it’s all about the lakes and the fish too. Seafood lovers will be spoilt for choice when dining out. Make sure you try the local sun-dried fish, which is a regional speciality.

Local wines provide the ideal accompaniment to your meal but if you want to try something a little different, try Aperol Spritz - you can’t miss its distinctive orange glow. And for dessert? Ice cream of course! There are hundreds of different flavours that you can work your way through on your Lake Garda holiday.

More about Lake Garda

Lake Garda has plenty to offer, but these are some highlights.

Gardaland
Italy’s largest theme park has white knuckle rides such as ‘Space Vertigo’ and ‘Magic Mountain’ for those who like extreme thrills. Those of a more nervous disposition can try the river rapids or experience the 4D Ice Age show. There is also a fabulous aquarium.

Garda boat trips
Whether you choose a leisurely cruise or opt for a speedier hydrofoil or catamaran, a boat trip provides a different perspective on the lakes and mountains access to lots of hidden gems.

Desenzano del Garda
This is Lake Garda’s biggest town and is still beautifully unspoilt. The picturesque Piazza Malvezzi, imposing cathedral and delightful Old Quarter are well worth exploring and the pretty harbour is a great place to relax and soak in the atmosphere.

Arena di Verona
A must of any holiday to Lake Garda and the surrounding Italian Lakes regions. Even if you don’t manage to get tickets to the opera, you can still appreciate this wonderful amphitheatre large enough to hold 15,000 people.

Verona
This beautiful, medieval city is packed full of elegant architecture and impressive Roman remains. Try and get tickets for the opera, held in the Roman Arena built in the first century AD. Don’t leave without visiting Casa di Giulietta on Via Cappello – the setting for the balcony scene in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

Getting to Lake Garda has never been simpler, with plenty of options when it comes to both flying and driving.

There are so many different types of days out in Lake Garda, you're sure to find something for everyone.

Wine buffs and wine lovers are in for a treat in this pretty little resort, with lots of opportunities to taste the delicious local wine. Then you can choose a glass or two of your favourite to accompany your lunch. After lunch, why not take a gentle stroll? You could even try a few more wines – we won’t tell. Parco Natura Viva, Bussolengo
A delight for children and adults of all ages, this nature park is home to more than 1500 animals including Italy’s largest chimp colony.

Zoo Safari de Lago Maggiore
Spend the day with exotic animals in a vast natural habitat. Some are best left to their own devices, but those in the petting zoo are happy to be touched and admired up close. There are also rides to keep younger children amused.

Lake Garda is home to an array of picturesque towns & villages.

Gargnano
This popular lakeside resort found fame (or infamy) as Mussolini’s refuge, now it’s known for its variety of shops and restaurants set against an attractive mountain backdrop.

Limone
Located at the foot of the dramatic mountains to the North West of Lake Garda and set amongst acres of lemon and olive groves, this really is a very pretty village. Take a wander through its narrow cobbled streets and admire the old-fashioned cottages with their beautiful flowers.

Riva del Garda
This elegant resort has been welcoming visitors for over one hundred years and has many fine buildings and hotels, including the Rocca fortress. Enjoy a stroll through the public gardens or tuck into pizza and ice cream at the waterfront restaurants. The resort is also well known as one of Garda’s best watersports centres.

Salò
This lovely medieval town, positioned on one of Garda’s bays, is a great place to stock up on local produce and the starting point for boat trips across the lake.

Malcesine
This colourful little fishing village is ideal for an evening stroll through the winding streets or a cable car ride up Monte Baldo to catch the sunset. But if that sounds a little tame, then we suggest you get on your bike – and hit the well marked trails.

Garda Town
Once a fishing village, this is now a busy resort with pots of charm and plenty to explore before heading for the Punta San Vigilio and the beach to relax and soak up some sun.

Bergamo
A city in two parts, connected by a funicular. Jump on board and ride to the top where you’ll find great views and the best of the sights.

Peschiera del Garda
The main attraction of this peaceful town is its ancient fortress, but we’d advise that you put some time aside for the artworks within the sanctuary of the Madonna del Frassino, which are just beautiful.

Desenzano del Garda
Full of life and hustle and bustle, this lakeside town still retains its beauty and charm. A great place for wandering and people watching, especially in the delightful Old Quarter.

Sirmione
This is a much visited beauty spot and spa. Set on a picturesque narrow peninsular jutting out into the lake, it has a romantic castle surrounded by water and is a popular venue for weddings. Sigh...

Venice
The ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’ is within easy reach of the Lakes, and a trip to the Grand Canal, Bridge of Sighs and St Mark’s Square is an absolute must. Why not treat yourself to some exquisite Murano glassware or a romantic gondala ride. Feel free to sing that song. The gondaliers really love it – honestly!

Lake Garda boasts an impressive history, we would recommend checking out the following locations.

Verona
Home of Roman remains, an amazing Roman amphitheatre and elegant medieval buildings including the house that inspired the balcony scene in Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet and chic designer shops – the ideal destination for star-crossed lovers, history buffs and shopaholics.

Mantua
The city walls of Mantua protect some of the finest town squares and historic buildings in Italy – including Piazza Sordele, Palazzo Te and Palazzo Ducale. If you’re feeling slightly overwhelmed, you’ll find that it’s also a great place to sit and watch the world go by.

Milan
Milan is a historical and cultural centre home to La Scala opera house, Convent of Maria della Grazie, the home of da Vinci’s Last Supper, and ornate cathedral. The elegant Galleria Vittoria Emanuele is every fashionista’s dream destination.

It won't come as a surprise that Lake Garda has incredible natural beauty all around.

Gardone Riviera
Once Garda’s most sophisticated resort, the Gardone Riviera’s still got what it takes! Visit the exotic botanical gardens and stroll along the promenade and admire the elegant buildings, including Il Vittoriale, the spectacular former residence of Gabriele D'Annunzio - tickets sell out fast so aim to arrive early in the day.

Sabbia Valley, lake Idro
Spend a perfect day walking among lakeside dwellings, alpine meadows and mountain trails. Simply pick up a map and get going. Don’t forget your picnic!

You'll find a fabulous variety of activities in Lake Garda, from the adrenaline-pumping to the peaceful.

South Garda Karting
This outdoor venue hosts some pretty serious events but amateurs are welcome and there are karts suitable for young children and teenagers – they will love it!

Diving
There is plenty to explore beneath these clear, still lakes and divers are protected from boat trippers. There are 12 centres around Lake Garda alone, where you can hire gear or take a course.

Walking
There are miles and miles and miles of fantastic walks in the Italian lakes – just get your boots on and off you go.

Fishing
These waters are teeming with fish, including trout and salmon, so there are no excuses for coming home with nothing for dinner. There are great fishing sports everywhere - but make sure that you’ve bought a licence from a municipal office first.

Windsurfing
Windsurfers from all over the world are drawn by Garda’s still waters and dependable winds. Nago-Torbole, at the North of the Lake has hosted a number of major championships and there are also several hire centres and schools.

Boating
It’s the Lakes, of course there’s boating and there are all sorts of boats to hire. You’ll need a licence to get your hands on a powerboat.
